Life is filled with our to-do lists which we will probably never get done. We find ourselves chasing down the to-do’s and forgetting about the priorities that are fundamentally most important to us.
It really boils down to being present. Present to your life, present to your priorities. And ultimately present to what’s most important to you.
Creating a life that focuses on priorities was one of my top life practices last year. This is a long-term habit and lifestyle which I endeavor to practice every day.
Here’s how I do it:
- I shifted from seeing my list of to-do’s as a priority versus I create my list of to-dos WITH my priorities in mind.
- I break my day down into 2 or 3 priorities with a maximum committed action list of 6 items for the entire day.
Here’s one example:
Today’s Priority: Good Fat Company Marketing
Associated Action Steps:
- Write the first draft of the blog
- Create graphics
In the past, writing the first draft of the blog was the top priority. It would have been on my list of 50 things to do this week. The narrowed-down focus had me living less in the weeds and present to the big
picture goals and the impact I want to make on a daily basis.
This is effective, especially with the reality most of us do lead busy lives.
I didn’t learn this on my own. I have to give credit to Dr. Ai Addison from Classroom Without Walls. The work she is doing with young people and adults is a game changer for being present to our purpose,
skillsets, and priorities.
She created the Disruptor’s Planner and provided monthly and now weekly support meetings to help people train their minds in the realm of priorities.
Hands down, this was one of the biggest game-changers for me last year. I’m actually accomplishing more of what’s actually important.
