I am traveling through India with a group of ten.
I have been following a keto diet for about two years. The Indian diet is full of spices, potatoes, lentils, bread, vegetables and rice. All things carb. Most meals we have had are vegetarian, and while I could order something else, many places where we are eating meat is not even an option. Plus I am gluten free, well I was. Naan with the sauces are food of the Gods.
The first few days were interesting. I was in carb heaven. Seriously the food is over the top delicious! And my belly puffed up and I felt lethargic. Given that there is a 10.5 hour change that could be part of this too. Regardless all of the symptoms of eating high carb came right back.
I made the decision to just go with the trip, including experiencing the food and just noticing how it is affecting my body. I’ll only be here for a few weeks. It has been fascinating. To be that person with the very restricted diet would take away from my joy and Indian experience. I do fully get that Carbs make me hungry and bloated. I miss that feeling of being full and feeling lean.
If anything I am more committed to my keto lifestyle than ever. This break has made me appreciate how much better I feel and I am grateful for this deeper insight and connection with my body. I’m inspired to take my newly found deeper appreciation for the spices of India and make them keto friendly. So much fun to be had with this new cooking adventure.
As a note: When packing I did bring a few dozen Good Fat Bars and a jar of Perfect Keto MCT powder. Both have come in very handy. It has been fun to share these foods with my travel mates and introduce them to the possibilities of living a good fat life!
Much love,
Sherri
